What is the best flea control?

You want to use the best flea control for your pet. Of course. But there are currently such a large range to chose from that it is hard to know where to start.

The most common flea treatment available today are the topical or spot-on treatments. These are applied to the skin of the back of the neck or between the shoulder blades. They normally last for a month or so, and while they have been very useful over the last few years they do have a few drawbacks.

  1. They may not be 100% waterproof.
  2. They may come in contact with yourself or your children
  3. They may simply rub it off shortly after you apply the product.

But when you think about it, these downsides are manageable. Afterall, fleas are present on the skin of your pet and that is exactly where the spot-on flea treatments end up – exactly where you need them.

The biggest advantage of having an external flea control agent is that they have the potential to kill fleas before the flea has a chance to feed and to bite your pet. With any of the products that are given orally, it is guaranteed that the flea must bite to be killed. And as you’d expect this is not particularly pleasant for your pet. After all, that why we treat them.

So think carefully before you purchase your next flea treatment. A new product called Comfortis has recently been launched into the flea control market. It appears to work extremely well, based on the advertising with very rapid killing of fleas, and persisting for a full month. But fleas still need to bite your pet. And that’s what you wanted to avoid in the first place.
