Flea Prevention: 4 Ways to Keep Fleas Away
We have all seen them and we have all wondered how to kill them. Those small itchy little bugs that travel around on animals make my skin crawl just thinking about them. Of course, we are talking about FLEAS. They are disgusting little creatures that are impossible to get rid of, unless you know the secrets. Here we will reveal four things you can do to keep your home Flea Free.
#1: Flea Prevention
The first thing you want to do is prevent fleas from coming into your home in the first place. It is easier to keep your home flea free before they get their foot in the door and this means flea prevention on your pet.
The type of flea prevention will vary depending on where you live. For example, if you live in the country, then flea and tick medicine is a wise choice. However, if ticks are not around then you can go with just flea medicine. Talk to your vet to determine which flea medicine is right for your pet.
#2: Ridding Your Animal of Fleas
Once your pet is covered in fleas, flea prevention is nice but you will want immediate action. The easiest way to get rid of fleas is by giving your pet a flea bath. You can buy fleas shampoos almost everywhere but you must realize the shampoos are an immediate fix and do nothing for prevention.
When you do bathe your animal, start at the head and work towards the tail. This will keep the fleas from running up into the face and eyes of your beloved pet. Allow the sudsy animal to sit for a few minutes before washing the shampoo off. Again, rinse from the head towards the tail to keep anything from getting into the eyes.
#3: Ridding Your Home of Fleas
The main population of fleas will not be on your pet. They will be in the egg, larva or pupa stage. This means you have to clean everything in your house to rid your home of fleas.
Vacuum your entire home with flea powder and throw away the bag. Move the furniture, spray and vacuum under there as it is a favorite place for fleas to hide. Thoroughly spray and clean pet beds, pet houses, and any place the animal likes to sleep
#4: Neutralizing the Yard
The front and back yard will be the hardest place to kill fleas, which why it is so important to keep your dog or cat on flea prevention medication. However, there are some products you can use to spray your yard down to reduce the flea population.
Read the directions carefully because any flea treatment for the yard will be full of toxic chemicals. Never use it more than the recommended times and always keep children and animals away from the area until the packing says it is safe for them to go back.
